UNICEF Delegation Holds Technical Meeting with NPHIL Boss Ahead of Diarrheal Disease Preparedness Refresher Workshop

A technical delegation from UNICEF today, June 4, 2026, held a strategic meeting with the Interim Director-General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), Dr. Sia Wata Camanor, ahead of a planned Diarrheal Disease Preparedness Refresher Workshop.

The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration and coordination among health and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) stakeholders as Liberia prepares for the rainy season, a period often associated with an increased risk of diarrheal diseases and other public health concerns.

The National Public Health Institute of Liberia, in collaboration with the WASH Commission and the Ministry of Health, with support from UNICEF, is expected to host a one-day refresher workshop on June 12, 2026, at the Ministry of Health.

The workshop aims to align WASH and health actors on preparedness and response strategies and will cover key areas including seasonal and hotspot trends, roles and responsibilities of stakeholders, rapid response team integration, information management, and sanitation data utilization.

The initiative is intended to enhance coordination and ensure that all actors are equipped with a common understanding and approach to diarrheal disease preparedness and response.

Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Camanor commended UNICEF for its continued support to Liberia’s public health sector and for its commitment to strengthening preparedness efforts across the country.

She reaffirmed NPHIL’s dedication to maintaining a strong partnership with UNICEF in advancing public health interventions and safeguarding the health of the Liberian population.

The UNICEF delegation included Jean McCluskey, WASH Specialist for Emergency Preparedness; Dipti Rai, WASH Specialist; Ernest K. Brown, WASH Officer; and Julia Mameni Moore, WASH Officer. Also part of the meeting was Mr. Amos Gborie, Director Division of Environmental and Occupational Health, National Public Health Institute of Liberia and his deputy Mr. Leahwon Tokpah.

The upcoming workshop forms part of ongoing national efforts to improve preparedness, coordination, and rapid response capacity for diarrheal diseases, particularly during the rainy season when communities may face heightened public health risks.
